Good Karma?

When my cell phone rang and the caller ID showed an almost familiar phone number on the screen I answered it with great trepedition.  “May I speak to Jacob please?”  The woman on the other end asked.  In that moment I knew who she was, and my heart sank.  It was Debbie from Dr. P’s office.  “He isn’t here, but this is Susan how can I help you?”  I grabbed a post it note and a red pen, poised to write down the phone number for oncology, and to capture all the bad news that was surely going to flow.

“We found nothing”  She said pointedly and my breath caught in my throat.  “Excuse me?” 

“We found nothing.  There is no active bleeding, no residual bleeding, no dysfuntion of the intestines, nothing can be seen that could cause bleeding”  I found myself writting this down just so I knew that it was real and I didn’t dream it in my head.  Just to be sure however I reitereated the question that has been bouncing around my head for weeks “You found no cancer, no tumors, nothing like that right?  Its all clear?”

Her answer a resounding YES, its all clear.  If I weren’t sitting behind my desk I think I would have let the tears of joy fall.  We aren’t this lucky.  We don’t catch these breaks.  We have to fuss, and fight, and hollar for good to come to us, and even then its short lived but not this time.  Their only recommendation is that he follow up with his PCP to have his Hematocrit and Hemaglobin checked on a quarterly basis.  He is anemic, but it is not due to occult blood loss.

I could barely dial the phone to call him at work.  I can hear the relief in his voice.  We dodged a bullet and gained some good karma.
